A forwarded message from Mark Pesce:
Friends -
Five and a half years ago, for my first presentation at MINDSTATES, I produced a feature length film, Becoming Transhuman, which ran in synchrony with my spoken-word presentation. Shortly afterward I mixed my narration into the film and produced a final version of the film. Then, other than putting it onto DVD and giving it to a few friends, I did nothing with it at all. That was a mistake on my part, because, of all the talks and presentations I've given throughout the years, Becoming Transhuman is hands-down my favorite of the lot. It took 3 months of editing and polishing, but I have to say that even now I'm most proud of this work. It's stood the test of time.
Today - as a sort of New Year's Gift - I am providing you with a torrent file which will give you your very own copy of Becoming Transhuman. Just pop the torrent file into your favorite client - Azureus, or BitTorrent or whatever you like - and you'll join a swarm of peers who are also downloading Becoming Transhuman.
So, I ask you to download a copy of Becoming Transhuman, but, more than this, tell your friends about it. Have them download their own copy. And tell them to tell their friends, etc. The more something is shared, the more valuable it becomes, and it seems to me - in times like these - that the message of Becoming Transhuman is more relevant today than ever before.
Happy New Year to all!
Cheers,
Mark

Re: Becoming Transhuman
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 12:18 PMHoly Crap! I can't believe it. Look what you helped me find:
www.e-spaces.com/lbw/portf...trans.html
I've been looking for this for years ever since I saw Mark present Becoming Transhuman at Mind States 5 and a half years ago. Most of these videos are in the talk, but they are great to have on their own as well...
Thanks for the links Dimi. Great stuff. Hehe, yea I was wondering what was happening in 08. So, you're gonna be in Costa Rica, then? I'm about 85% sure I'll be there right now. It just depends on whether or not I move into a new house and if that taxes my travel fund or not. Anyways, I look forward to it, and I am trying as hard as possible to assure that I will be there. -

Re: Becoming Transhuman - thinking transhuman
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 8:04 AMHey, one thing always leads to another ... :)
Likewise, thanks for all the good info and links, and for the interest in reviving an almost defunct forum.
Sorry Kevin, but what exactly is taking place in Costa Rica in '08? I've always wanted to go there, I hear it's beautiful. Should I start planning? My ass will be securely relocated to Belgium by then, which don't mean nuttin 8)
Nick Bostrom's Simulation Argument is a fascinating one. I think it's quite plausible for all of "this" to be a "simulation." But more in the sense that what we call "reality" is in fact a recreation based on impulses derived from only a thin sliver of the available spectrum of energy which we observe out there... Thus: why not?? What's reality and what entitles us to standardise it universally? Scientists presently speculate that we may very well be living in the middle of a 'giant' alien civilisation (we cannot 'see' them but they may be aware of us). Humanity -for all we know- may represent as much as a mere "fishbowl" to "them", as in, we might only be some 'science project.' All highly speculative of course, and not necessarily something I gravitate towards, but still within the realm of the possible in my opinion.
Daniel Dennet is great and Consciousness Explained is highly interesting, but I certainly don't consider it the end-all answer (it does address many issues though and is a must read for anyone interested in the subject). Checked out Chalmers arguments? I think we're still (far) short of a philosophical quantum leap with regard to consciousness and reality as a whole. But these are very exciting times though. Anything can happen (and will happen, heh heh). I do think it is possible though, or it will be possible some day rather, to sensitise the brain directly and to be able to recreate "reality" in a similar fashion as our evolutionary natural sensory mechanisms do, complete with full sensory (virtual) interaction, and perhaps go a few steps further even and make it hyper-real. One of the most fascinating areas of scientific progress today deals with computer-brain interfacing, and things are definitely happening in that area! I'd love to produce a documentary on this subject some day.
Thanks for all the kind words Marvin. I don't know what to say, other than, well... um, THANKS! Glad you're here too buddy, and for maintaining an open mind which makes conversations like this possible in to begin with. Looking forward to more thought provoking conversations from y'all!

Re: Becoming Transhuman
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 2:02 PMhahahaha... the FHI director is Nick Bostrom. I swear right now is an insanely synchronous time for whatever reason. But, the syncronicities are definitely increasing in regularity, and exponentially so. Very curious.
Anyways, Bostrom keeps popping up all over the place for me recently, in magazine articles, some random tv show I downloaded, other web stuff, and now this. If you look at my blog entitled "Ontology Recapitualtes Epistemology" (which was a final paper for my urban legends/folklore class, written a few weeks ago) Bostrom is even featured in there about halfway through, talking about his "ancestor simulation" idea. -

Re: Becoming Transhuman
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 11:24 PMIn the first few pages of "Consciousness Explained" (which you can read on Amazon) Dan Dennett says, no, you can't have such a realistic virtual reality. I tend to agree with his explanation, whereby it is just far, far too complex a task, even considering the exponential increase in computing power of Moore's law. But, I am not wed to this idea, it just seems the most reasonable answer I've come across. He points out that it is not impossible "in theory", but that things that are possible "in theory" don't necessarily have to be plausible in reality. For instance, it is possible "in theory", Dennett says, to build a stainless steel ladder to the moon or to write out, alphabetically, all intelligible English conversations of less than a thousand words. I love this part: "But neither of these are remotely possible in fact and sometimes an impossibility in fact is theoretically more interesting than a possibility in principle"
Dennett's argument is really not that complicated, but it does require some elaboration to see what he's driving at, and he does it far better than I can, and in only 4 1/2 short pages, so if it really interests you, you can actually read the first several pages of the book at Amazon:

I would like to know if anyone has any explainable contrary thoughts on the matter, though... -

Re: Becoming Transhuman
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 4:48 AMKevin your posts mesmerize me. Have you written any books? Thank you for sharing the link. I think I'll have to be getting that book asap! I have a request to make of you & anyone else that wouldnt mind. I am new to this tribe and highly interested!!! Thank you dimi for the invite! I'm pretty excited to be here. My request is to see if you can make time to list a bunch of other good books to read? I could be wrong but am pretty sure your book lists would be incredible and help me get a good start to learning more interesting things. I have been more into "conspiracy" and other types of writing mostly. I have read a self help book here and there. I recently read Mans Search For Meaning by Victor Frankl and am now re-reading Why People Don't Heal And How They Can by Caroline Myss (which I think is incredible!) Consciousness Explained looks like a good place to start but if you could list 5, 10, or 100 books you think are fantastic, I would be thrilled and will report back to you what I think after reading them. : ) From things I've read on the dmt tribe and now here you guys are like role models to me. lol Pioneers of sorts. I'm sure there's others that went before you but I don't see them posting anywhere here on tribe. You guys are a real inspiration & a wealth of knowledge. It's been a long time since I've experienced such solidly intelligent discourse. And friendly even! That makes it even better. That you guys don't come off as arrogant knowledge snobs. You guys are the new gurus. lol Thanks for being you & sharing!

POOCH AND THE DOG STAR
Change is seen as positive since lively. Nothing is that perfect as not to be perfected. But in order to perfect things, one must often drop back bad1 habits. Sometimes that is fast since we leave dead people behind, beloved but useless friends, long cherished illusions, that is, in terms of RTRRT2, betas3i.
PORTALS
KELU-1ii, the Orion Stargate and Witchallow are portals. The toy mind4 hooks to portals attaining freedom. Glory lies on the other side of the portal.

1Not in the moral sense of being bad, just obstacles on the way that at one time were perhaps positive props.
2Real time reality rendering tools. Historically the positive thing to be attained was labeled as alpha, while the negative thing to be discreated was labeled as beta. Thus betas. We could use the word negativity, but that would sound too obvious, as hooking to dangerously profane associations.
3The negativity might have been something positive back in time, now useless. There is no need for childish programs while one upgrades. Habits that were useful are no more. It is amazing how many bad habits are stored within the circle of influence of our old reliable acquaintances. It is best to afloat free and unknown, yet people choose slavery by default. A good doggie is dangerous, the wolf is not. The wolf cares not, roams aloof and does not starve at 10 am. The wolf is master of itself and friend with nature, the dog is not. Therefore the dog is dangerous for transhumans who want freedom.
4Also known as true mind. This mind is unknown to most humans, but some, a very restricted crew that is no crew of any ship, knows it. The eleven crows, maybe, or scattered individuals with scarce taste for reason.
iIs the heart of Davy Jones safe within its locker? An Englishman would interrupt a war to have his afternoon tea. Beta does not imply being second, thus inadequate. The beta might in fact be first or before, e.g. The good habit of the past that is thwarting our progress now. There might not be afternoon tea beyond your own stargate, then again, who knows? The possibilities are infinite for toy mind.
iiThe brown dwarf of the apocalypse? This closest brown dwarf to us has a strange schedule for the year 2012.
